How To Win In Omaha Poker

Omaha Poker is not as popular as Texas Hold'em.  However, if you want to win in mixed poker variations such as H.O.R.S.E, H.O.S.E and other variations, it is necessary that you know Omaha Poker as well.  You may be excited to know that World Series of Poker (WSOP), the most popular poker tournament offers $10,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event yearly.  So, learning Omaha Poker will be good if you want to play in poker tournaments like WSOP.

Just like Texas Hold'em, Omaha Poker is also a poker game using community cards concept.  Thus, if you want to win in Omaha, you have to know how it is played and what strategy will win you the pot.

Likewise, the Omaha 8 or Omaha Hi-Lo which is a variation of Omaha Poker needs a different technique if you want to win in the games consistently.

In this article, however, we will focus on Omaha Poker.

Let us move on.

In order to win in Omaha Poker, you have to know how the game is played.

How to Play Omaha Poker

The game starts by the small blind and the big blind posting the first money in the pot.

Then, the dealer will deal 4 hole cards to each player.

The first round of betting will start.  After this, the dealer will deal the flop (three cards in the middle of the table).

Then, the second round of betting will happen followed by the dealer dealing the turn (fourth community card).

Another betting round, then the river will be drawn.  The river is the fifth community card.

The final betting round will happen and the showdown follows.  The player who holds the best poker hand on the table wins the pot.

Discussion on the hole cards

While you will hold on to four pocket cards, please take note that you will only use two of them.

This is what differentiates Omaha from Texas Hold'em.  In Omaha Poker, you will have four pocket cards but you will only use two of them and combine them with 3 from the community cards.

In Texas Hold'em, you have the option to use either both your pocket cards, only one of your pocket cards or all the community cards.   This is a huge difference and you have to be sure you remember this when you play Omaha Poker.

Now, because the topic is how to win in Omaha Poker, we have to discuss the playable hands.  Knowing the strength of the card you hold will help you bet intelligently or fold when the probability of winning is close to nil.

Here are the recommended playable hole cards in Omaha.

A-A-K-K double-suited

This is the strongest hole card.  You can bet aggressively if you hold this card but of course, you have to consider your position as well.  Just the same of the list of playable hands, this is the strongest.

A-A-J-T double-suited

This is another strong playable hole card in Omaha.  You may be asking why double suited is necessary, it is because you are looking at royal flush if the tides turn favorably on your side.

A-A-Q-Q double-suited

A-A-J-J double-suited

A-A-T-T double-suited

A-A-9-9 double suited

A-A-x-x

This is a strong hand because you have double Ace.  It may be preferable that your other two cards will be a pair to make this hole card stronger.

J-T-9-8 double-suited

This hole card is already drawing for a straight but if the community card that will come up would lead to flush, then you are in a better position, this hole card being double suited.  Of course, you cannot use all of the four cards to develop your hand but it still draws for a nice hand in Omaha.

Other strong hole cards in Omaha

K-K-Q-Q

K-K-J-J

K-Q-J-T

K-K-T-T

K-K-A-Q

K-K-Q-J

K-K-Q-J

Q-Q-J-J

Q-Q-T-T

Q-Q-A-K

Q-Q-A-J

Q-Q-A-T

Q-Q-K-J

Q-Q-K-T

Q-Q-J-T

Q-Q-J-9

If you are dealt these cards you are good to go and may try to take in the pot.  There are other medium strength cards but they have to be double suited with pairs.

Of course, this is not to say that if you do not have these hands, you are a sure looser, you may try your luck but it can be costly if the tides do not go into your direction.

Basic Strategy

Just like Texas Hold'em, Omaha is a game of strategy.  Thus, in order to win, you have to learn how to read your opponents.  You have to be able to gage the strength of your opponent's cards by merely observing on their demeanor on the table.

Finally, practice will help you make good on the game.  Reading all tutorials, watching instructional videos and watching final games as they happen on television is not a full proof way to get better in the game.  Again, practice.  Every time you have the chance, practice your game.  This is the best way to get better.

Later on, you will be ready to play any mixed poker game because you know Texas Hold'em and Omaha Hold'em.  You may also want to learn about Omaha 8 or Omaha Hi-Lo, we will discuss that in another article.
