Is the Future of Physical Books Over?
It is worth noting that the Kindle version of Dan Brown’s much-hyped book The Lost Symbol sold more copies in the first few days than did the printed version. Admittedly, the Kindle version was cheaper ($9.99 compared with the hefty price of $29.95 for the hard copy). But that an electronic version can outsell a printed copy is a significant sign that the way we read is changing.
The Kindle, for those who don’t know, is an electronic device sold by Amazon that downloads a written copy of any book or magazine in its 350,000 volume library. Once downloaded, the copy is yours to read when you like. The device is just five inches by eight by .3 inches in size and boasts that the battery will last days before a recharge is needed.
Though initially it cost a whopping $400, in spite of this, Amazon is now predicting that as many as 200,000 units will be sold by the end of the year. The price has now dropped 35% to $259, $279 for the international version. And since Amazon keeps track of what all you purchased, if the unit crashes you can always reload them at no cost.
Though the type size of the Kindle can be made larger or smaller, Amazon has now produced the Kindle 2, the Poppa Bear of eBook readers. It has a 9.7 inch diagonal screen, close to the size of notebook paper. The Kindle 2 is also .3 inches thick, has a memory of 3.3 gigs (up to 3,500 books storage), and an equally impressive battery life. The Kindle 2 sells for $489 at present. Both units have a read aloud feature though the voice is certainly inferior to the quality of a professionally done audiobook.
Both Kindles work through a 3G network like a cell phone, so you don’t have to be near a Wi-Fi to get a book. Literally, as their ad states, a reader can go from hearing about a book to owning and reading it in 16 shades of gray in less than a minute. Magazines or newspapers are available before they arrive on the newsstand. One of its many neat features is access to an online dictionary. If the reader comes upon an unfamiliar word in a text, he can use the scroll wheel to select it and look up the meaning.
iPhone or Touch can also be used as e-Book readers through the free application called Stanza; thousands of free books and best sellers are available for download. Barnes & Noble eReader does the same through their store though, at last report, overprices the books. Kindle for iPhone application is also available. The Touch and iPhone are not as large as even the smaller Kindle but the monitor is in color (which helps with pictures and some charts), the type size can also be adjusted, and, for about the same price, the Touch can do much more than just provide books.
E-Book readers do have certain disadvantages however. For example, though you paid for and own the electronic version of a book, you are forbidden to share it with others as you could a volume. It is convenient to have so many books available at any time, but you can’t write in the margins or give it as a gift. You are always dependent on electrical power eventually, and its size and cost make it a target for theft. Though you don’t need a giant print version of anything, neither can you pass down a book treasure to future generations. (Imagine the grandfather in Princess Bride reading from a Kindle!)
Paper and ink books many decline in popularity, but it will be a long time before purists will concede them as being a worthy replacement. The smell and feel of a book is simply not replaceable by an electronic machine.
If you have a treasured volume you would like to preserve, consider the hand bookbinding services of Tightly Bound Books. They're not only professional, but friendly, too. As their motto states, they provide "Custom book repair with personal care."
