Steelers Football
Tennesse Titans vs. Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Sept. 19th 2010
Two years ago Ben Roethlisberger was a Super Bowl champion and Vince Young's career was in jeopardy.
Big Ben was the toast of Pittsburgh and Young was sitting on the sidelines, and had scared those close to him in September of 2008 that he may try and take his own life.
What a difference two years makes.
Last season Young came off the bench and led the Tennessee Titans to become the first team in NFL history to win five straight after losing their first six games. Although his team did not make it to the playoffs, Young kicked off the off-season with a trip to the Pro Bowl.
All Rotehlisberger did in his time away from the field was endure public shame after a run-in with the law.
Now, with the Steelers having narrowly escaped with an overtime victory at home against in Atlanta in Week 1, and the Titans having put on maybe the best display of the season's first week, the two teams meet in a clash that could give the winner a significant edge after only two weeks.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had to figure that if they could survive at 2-2 until Big Ben came back, they'd have to be feeling pretty positive. If they can get a win in Tennessee, they'd already be at that win total with cream puff Tampa Bay the following week and then Baltimore. A win against Young and the Titans would likely give them a great chance to make it to the bye week and then Roethlisberger's return at 3-1 in a division that may not be as strong as some thought before the season started (we're looking at you, Cincinnati).
The Steelers will try and hold down the fort without Big Ben by playing traditional Steelers football – relying on defense and the running game to win games. Last week Rashard Mendenhall carried 22 times for 120 yards. On the other side of the ball, the Steelers defense held Atlanta to only 58 yards rushing.
Dennis Dixon was rather impressive in throwing for 235 yards without an interception in the Steelers win, but he will undoubtedly face a stiffer pass rush from the Titans, who sacked Jason Campbell four times last week and forced both an interception and a fumble.
The Titans on the other hand have to have liked what they saw out of Young and all-world running back Chris Johnson. They also have to like what they saw down in Houston last week. Having the dreaded Colts, who have a tough game at home against the New York Giants this weekend, start out the season with a loss is almost as good news for the Titans as them winning their own game.
Jeff Fisher's team continues to win games the way they did last year, by letting Johnson run wild. The back, who has run for 100 yards in 12 consecutive games, had 142 last week against Oakland. He was balanced in the attack by Young, who threw for 154 yards and ran for 30 of his own in a game that was never even close. The Titans strong running attack will meet head-to-head with a Steelers defense that has allowed an NFL-low three 100-yard rushers since 2006.
The Steelers defensive and offensive lines both suffered hits last week, as Casey Hampton suffered a strained hamstring and tackle Max Starks suffered an ankle injury. In a bruising game like the one expected in Nashville Sunday, those big boys up front can make all the difference.
But with all the talk of running and smash-mouth football, the quarterbacks could decide this one. While Dixon is still learning the ropes, Young is full of vitality and riding high once again.
