Download The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made (2004) for FREE - Download Movies for FREE

The time comes every year to wrap up our take on all the movies we've seen throughout the year, and sum them all up in one long Best and Worst list.
I've got to say 2008 was the year for movies. We had big blockbuster action flicks, highly praised dramas, riotous comedies, and charming family animations. But just as good films come, you are always bound to have a few bad ones. And in 2008, we also had some terribly embarrassing films. I thought, since Oscars are coming up, and I've seen nearly all the films this year, that I would sum up MY best and worst list of '08! I personally found this to be a very exciting year, and probably one of the best Oscar shows we'll have for years to come (seeing as how we have a high-grossing superhero flick nominated for many awards and stunning performances by actors from all stunning, moving films). Here's my take on the BEST of '08, and feel free to comment and share your opinions with me!

THE BEST FILMS OF '08:
1. Slumdog Millionaire: The underdog at first, "Slumdog Millionaire" is the little film that could. Who cares if it had a low-budget production and unknown actors. Despite that, it turned out to be the best film of the year. From the fantastic, fast-paced storytelling and flashbacks, to the phenomenal acting from both young old leads, to the uplifting, touching storyline, "Slumdog Millionaire" is a winner and a crowd-pleaser for all people of all kinds. It touched me, moved me, and inspired me in ways that I didn't think it could. I came out a changed person and am totally happy for my decision of seeing the film. It turned out to be one of my favorite films of all time AND also features one of the best soundtracks of all time! Best Picture of the year.

2. The Dark Knight- The blockbuster smash that made a record as the second highest grossing film of all time. The director's take on the Batman series, not only elevates the quality of superhero movies alike, but also creates a new standard for visionary and cinematography for movies in general. The concepts explored were much more deep than what you can expect from a superhero film, focusing more on menace and insanity than good vs. evil. And of course, the acting, truly elevated this film, especially by the late Heath Ledger. With his body slump, high-pitched cackle, scary personal traits, and snake-like hissing, Heath Ledger revolved what it takes to be a phenomenal villain. His memorable, hilarious, and evil take on the Joker made it one of the best performances of all time. But that's not to forget other great performances, notably by Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckheart, and Morgan Freeman. Overall, an outstanding movie, changing the face of entertainment forever.

3. Twilight- Call me insane if you want, but I believe this was the best family film of the year. We really needed a good family film, since we had no "Hairspray" or no "Pirates" this year. Instead, we got the next big thing: Twilight. Despite what die-hard book fans of the Vampire saga said about the film, it was entertaining to audiences that were unassociated to the film. The stunning dark, ice-cold visuals, gorgeous chemistry between the leads, and overall vampire theme, instantly catches your attention and sucks you into the world of vampires. I honestly found this a very enjoyable film, and despite what neigh sayers say, I believe Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart did a great job. Sure, it's not Oscar material, but it was one of the better films of the year in my eyes.

4. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- Visually dazzling, and emotionally moving, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" takes on a very unlikely subject, and tells a fantastic story that has never been attempted before. Creative, admirable, and beautiful- "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is deserving of any artistry awards it should receive. The only things detracting from this film is the length and overall lack of magic in the film that it so badly believes it has. Brad Pitt did a nice job and so did Cate Blanchett. Not my favorite movie of the year, but in terms of technical moviemaking, the film did excell.

5. Wall-E- "Wall-E" is quite possibly Disney/Pixar's best creation. Although I found "Finding Nemo" to be more enjoyable, nothing is more creative than this magical love story between a trash compactor and a high-tech apple product. Visually stunning and fantastically told, "Wall-E" is certainly deserving of any award it's being praised of. For me, on a personal note, it's hard for me to go through a movie with no talking, but for some reason "Wall-E" was very entertaining and enjoyable, despite the fact about 2 words were said the whole film.

6. Iron Man- Let's not all forget the big blockbuster action flick that kicked off 2008. In general, it's no "Dark Knight", but there is still something very special in "Iron Man". It focuses less on action and more on the evolving plot that brings the protagonist to that point. In the hands of Robert Downey Jr., this film was exciting, hilarious, and riveting all the same. I highly enjoyed this film, and it redefines what it means to be a comic book movie.

7. Kung Fu Panda- A highlight of the year, "Kung Fu Panda" was a great family animation story that both amused and amazed. It's no "Wall-E", but comes with a entirely different approach of just being fun and enjoyable. It's creativity is present, and Jack Black shines as the voice of the chubby, lovable Panda. What seems to be a kiddy cartoon, is also enjoyable for adults.

I'm leaving 8, 9, and 10 open up for comments. I haven't seen "The Wrestler", "Milk", or "Frost/Nixon" yet to be giving reviews on those. I am anxiously waiting to see "The Wrestler" and "Milk", and when I do, I'll inform you of whether those are honorable mentions.

WORST OF 2008:
1. Shutter: A complete embarrassment. Came at the beginning of the year, and was a low-budget remake of a Japanese horror film and lacked in any liveliness or scares. Just a crappy remake that just needs to be completely ignored.

2. Fool's Gold: First off, I don't think Kate Hudson and Matthew McHonohey have much chemistry or any life in their onscreen relationship. The plot is so simplistic, and this overall, was boring, stupid, cliched, and an unfunny mess.

3. Hancock: It may be that I hate seeing Will Smith in this kind of a role, when clearly, he deserves so much better. Not a good action flick. Stupid, thoughtless, unimpressive crap.

4. Eagle Eye: This thriller was so brain-dead, did they think the audience was stupid? Sure, there are some scares, but the plot is so unrealistic, and dumb, that by the end of the film, the whole theater actually started laughing at how pointless and unreasonable the whole thing is.

5. Ghost Town: It's not that this was the worst movie of the year, but the fact that it had so much potential to be a true moving low-budget film, and completely failed at that, was disappointing. A likable, charming cast, but the film consisted entirely of conversational talking, which became boring and tiresome. Instead of actually showing events taking place, the whole film was one lengthy, boring, flat conversation.

Other films I'm at debate with this year, and we're only "so-so" were Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Penelope, Miss Pettigrew Lived For A Day, Wanted, Role Models, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Yes Man, Marley Me, and believe it or not, Tropic Thunder.
