Wayne Gretzky, Hockey Legend
Wayne was born January. 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario 26, 1961 in Ontario Canada close to Toronto. At two years of age he had his first skates . Wayne took to the ice and everything was recorded on his dad's camera .
By obeying his father's urgings to go where the puck was headed, not to where it was he outshone his rivals.
Was he the greatest ? When few players were scoring 100 points in a season , Gretzky was boasting 200 plus. Wayne did that 4 times , no other player has ever done this .In 1985-86 he peaked at 215 points. In 1981 he broke the 50 goals in 50 games record long held by the iconic Maurice Richard . Gretzky was just 20 years old. 39 game was all it took. Wayne went on to do it again 9 times in the 80's!
Wayne netted an unbeleivable 92 goals in the 1980 season easily broke the old mark of 76 held by Phil Esposito. Wayne also holds the assists mark , 163 recorded ion 1986.
The Ross and Hart trophies were his every year in the 80's . He won the Hart trophy(MVP) nine times , better than any other star in any team sport, and in the same decade the Ross ( netting ) was his 7 times , and then three more times in the 1990's . He was the dominant player on the dominant team of the mid-'80s , giving the Oilers four Cups in a span of 5 years and twice being named MVP of the playoffs .
you might not think that 175lbs and 5'11" is the making of a sports phenomenon. His remarkable talent lay elsewhere, not in brawn and muscle. Gretzky anticipated plays seconds before they developped, then played accordingly.
He saw what should happen, where the others on the ice would be in the following moments .
He couldn't beat people with strenght ; He didn't have a hard shot; Gretzky wasn't the quickest of skaters . It was his vision, anticipation and intelligence that set him apart
Wayne said he sensed the other players rather than actually see them . So he frequently passed without looking .
He was always approachable despite his fame. Gretzky was always ready to sign autographs. Gretzky new that for that fan, that youngster, it could seem like the greatest thing that ever happened in his life.
He was The Great Gretzky as a kid. He was The Great Gretzky as a teenager. Wayne was The Great One in the NHL. Wayne alwaysproved worthy of his moniker, the Great One.
It was on his 18th birthday that he became an Oiler with a 3 year contract and $10,000,000 richer. He proved worthy finishing his rookie yr. with 104 points and the rookie-of-the-year award.
The next year the Great One quieted any remaining disbelievers by becoming the youngest player at 19 to reach 50 goals in a year and lead the league with 137 points.
The Oilers, now in financial difficulty, traded Wayne to the L.A. Kings in 1988.
Gretzky played in L.A. for eight years and went on to St Louis then the Rangers.
On Oct. 15, 1989, No. 99 became the No. one all-time NHL scorer with his 1,851st point, passing Howe. 4 years went by before he surpassed his hero once again with a 802nd goal
In 1999 he retired with 2,857 NHL points, moe than 1,000 more than the runner-up, Gordy Howe. More of a play-maker than a scorer, his goals statistic was still a most impressive 894 in a 20 year career, once again an NHL mark .
