World Overcrowding, from Myth to Facts
When our second child was born over 35 years ago, we were told by well-intentioned friends that we should not have any more children because the world is already overpopulated. We obviously didn’t agree for we had five more. Since then the rant continues.
Several decades ago, Paul Ehrilich said, “It is already too late to avoid famines that will kill millions, possibly by 1975”. Another false prophet said, “I state flatly that the hungry world will not able able to feed itself ten years from now”. This was stated in 1967. History has proven these predictions totally false.
Indeed, the world is getting more populated. The U.S. alone increases one person about every 16 seconds. The world population has increased 3.5 billion just since 1950. But the world is a long ways from being overcrowded. For evidence, ask yourself how far you would have to go from your home to be in wide open spaces? I can do so in around 5 minutes.
Though the population density of New Jersey is 1171 people/mile2, seven states have a density less than 20, and seven have fewer than a million people. The national average is only 95. My average sized home town fits 65,400 people into 30 square miles, a density of 2160 people/mile2. The place children spend most of their time during the week, the school classroom, has a population density of a million people/mile2. In other words, to be crowded, you have to choose to bunch together. They are certainly not caused by a lack of land.
Thirty-four people/mile2 is the world population density, or 7.5 acres of useable land for every person on earth. Most of the world is still uninhabited. In fact, all of us, living in the same population density as New York City (c. 25,000 people/mile2) could live in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. If you refer the less crowded suburbia density, everyone could live comfortably in the 48 contiguous states.
The starving people of Bangladesh (2750 people/mile2) or India (890 people/mile2) are often presented as evidence for overcrowding. The crowded conditions are blamed for their troubles. Yet, contrast India with the industrial giant Japan whose density is only slightly less. Instead, the reasons why starvation is rampant in areas include false religious beliefs, unwise political control, corruption, wars, and other man-made conditions, rarely overpopulation. Truthfully, the land in most countries, including India, could sustain a much greater population.
Ignoring the facts, however, the clarions of doom continue to sound. “We cannot long continue our present rate of progress. The first check for our growing prosperity, however, must render our population excessive” . Does this sound like the morning news? It was written in 1865! “Our number are burdensome to the world, which can hardly support us” . This was forecast by Tertullian in the 2nd century! The truth is that India alone has sufficient rich farm land to feed the entire world! And food production has increased 1000% in the last 75 years. The dangers of famine and starvation are not increasing but decreasing.
So who cares about all this? The principle is, if you cause a crisis, you can get just about anything you want. The doom and gloom about world overpopulation has encouraged the justification of abortion since another person will demand food, water, fuel, and the like. Too often children are viewed as a liability, not an asset to the world.
This quote is from a leading textbook for training Gynecologists. “In the minds of many, rapid growth of population has become second only to nuclear warfare as civilization’s greatest menace. The gynecologist- obstetrician has assumed a leadership role and has recognized the necessity of controlling human fertility. . . Population growth is perforce temporary; that it will- indeed must- eventually cease, halted either by an increase in deaths or a decrease in births. There is no other way. Thus, people must come to want fewer children”. A woman expecting her third child might get what advice from a doctor so trained? The fact is that hysterectomies are the second most common major surgery each year (800,000), and only 10% are due to cancer.
The real problem is a lack of love for children, not a fear that there are too many. They are viewed as a nuisance, a hindrance to reaching our goals. Yet children are the future of a country, for good or evil. When they are properly trained, children both multiply their parents’ impact, and in their own way benefit the world as good citizens. Children are not the destruction of the world, but its hope.
The founders of No Greater Joy love children and set up their ministry dedicated to sharing the principles of wholesome child training tips and joyful family relationships. Visit their website for great tips today.
