Vancouver Canucks Tickets - Canucks Prove Playoff Viability In Long Road Trip
Could this be the year the Vancouver Canucks take home the coveted Stanley Cup Trophy? If their recent performance on a record-breaking road trip is any indication, it may be. The team set an NHL record for a 14-game streak of road games that began on Jan. 30 and ended on March 10, the longest streak of road games in league history. Road games make it notoriously difficult for teams to build momentum, but the Canucks responded brilliantly by coming away with a record of 8-5-1. The league took notice, leading to many analysts commending the performance and dissecting what it means for the playoffs.
The road trip saw the team crisscrossing North America, hitting spots as near as Montreal and as far away as Tampa Bay, Fla. and Phoenix, Ariz. The National Hockey League's website talked to the players about their favorite parts of the road trip, and Tanner Glass and Alex Burrows both agreed that their favorite city to visit was Chicago. Glass explained on the site, "Then the atmosphere at the game was incredible. Those people cheering during the anthem really gets you going. We would have liked to come out better in that one, but it was definitely a playoff atmosphere in that building."
The long road trip concluded in a big way for the Canucks as right winger Mikael Samuelsson was named the NHL's first star of the week. The rest of the league's stars looked on as he tallied 10 points in four games, with six goals and four assists. The other two stars of the week were Phoenix's Lee Stempniak and Predators' Pekka Rinne. As of March 15, Samuelsson has notched 30 goals and 23 assists in the 2009-10 season.
The Canucks took full advantage of home games upon returning from their long road trip, topping the Ottawa Senators 5-1 on March 13 and the Calgary Flames 3-1 on March 14. They currently sit atop the Northwest Division with a record of 43-23-3. Their closest competition is the Colorado Avalanche, who have a record of 39-23-6.
Their record also currently puts them fourth in the entire league, behind the Washington Capitals (46-14-9), San Jose Sharks (43-15-10) and Chicago Blackhawks (44-18-6). Since the regular season wraps up in April, the Canucks have all but locked up a place in the playoffs. The Canucks' history dates back to 1945, when the team became part of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Over two decades later, the Canucks became part of the NHL, and they have been fighting for a Stanley Cup win ever since. They have made it to the Stanley Cup finals twice, once in the 1980s and again in the 1990s, but they came up short both times. This year could finally be the Canucks' chance at a championship. Along with Samuelsson, the Canucks are stacked with stars like twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Alexandre Burrows and Mason Raymond. This season could be historic in more than one way for the Canucks.
