Looking At The Pittsburgh Penguins
It really came as no surprise to anyone when, in 1966, the National Hockey League awarded an expansion franchise to the city of Pittsburgh. After all, the investor group looking to get the team included some big names, not just in Pittsburgh, but in the United States. The well known names of Heinz and Mellon were involved as was Art Rooney, owner of the Steeler football team. And so that is how it all started for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Most expansion teams in any sport tend to have a rocky opening season. This was not the case for the Penguins. They ended the 1967-68 season with just seven fewer wins than losses. Not great, but not bad for a new team. They were also able to pull off an upset over one of the NHL's "original Six". In an October 1967 game, they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2.
Penguin fans had reason to be hopeful right out of the gate. This is because the team was able to get its hands on a young rookie by the name of Michel Briere. Over the course of the 1969-70 season, Briere scored more points than any other rookie, leading his team to the Western semi-finals. Unfortunately that championship ended in a loss to St. Louis Blues in six games. Even so, fans were sure they had reason to be hopeful about the future of their club.
Shortly after the Penguins' playoff run, fans were horrified to learn of the news of their new star Briere. While driving in Quebec, Briere had a catastrophic automobile accident. He suffered massive head injuries. He was fully comatose for a full year, and subsequently passed away shortly thereafter.
Let's fast forward to the NHL draft of 1984. To say it was a landmark occasion for the Penguin franchise is not an exercise in hyperbole. It was at this draft that they got their hands on a player who would go on to be arguably the greatest of all time. This first pick in the draft was not without controversy. Many rival executives felt that the Pens went in the tank during the end of the season to ensure themselves the first overall draft pick.
True or not, the fact is that the team drafted Mario Lemieux. The list of all he accomplished is seemingly endless. He led his team to Stanly Cup victories in both 1991 and 1992. He has won dozens of NHL awards and trophies. In 1988 he accomplished something amazing that had never been done before, or since. In a single game against the New Jersey Devils, he scored all five ways possible: regular strength, shorthanded, penalty shot, empty net and power play.
When rivaling teams (and fans) were able to finally sigh with relief that Lemieux was retiring, another superstar Penguin came on the scene. And that would be Sidney Crosby. At age 21 he became the youngest captain to lead his team to the Cup. His awards at this time were still well fewer than those of Lemieux.
Today, the Pittsburgh Penguins remain a powerful force in the league. They can always be found at or near the top of the standings. Oh, and they still have Sidney Crosby skating around making a difference.
